• Angling Trust buys shares in Hastings Pier

The Angling Trust, through the Sussex Marine Region, is pleased to announce that it has bought shares in the Hastings Pier Community Share offer. The Trust is also in discussion with the Charity about access for anglers on the newly built pier and how to integrate the needs of anglers with the general public.

The Share Scheme is part of the fundraising effort the Charity is promoting to raise the final £500,000 which is required to finish the job of resurrecting this once great local amenity.

Angling Trust Sussex Marine Region Organiser Tim Macpherson says of the move “it is very important that we make sure that local anglers have proper access to what was once a great fishing venue attracting hundreds of anglers through-out the year.

We are in discussions with the Charity about ensuring access for anglers and are planning to help with the fundraising by organising a high profile angling event. I can remember fishing on the pier when I was a kid and I’m keen to help in any way we can to reintroduce this opportunity to the next generation of anglers”

Do you think you’ve got what it takes to fish for England?

If so, enter the Junior Beach Match at the Bexhill Sea Angling Festival on Sunday September 8th where coaches of our elite international sea angling teams will be scouting for talented young sea anglers between the ages of 13 and 18 with the potential to fish for England.

  • Thumbs Up For Mullet Fishing Masterclass

We were delighted when over 25 sea, coarse and game members attended the mullet masterclass on the Ouse at Newhaven last Sunday. The event proved so popular that we had to close registration only 36 hours after launching it, for fear of being overwhelmed!

A blisteringly hot day and blazing sunshine made for fine sunbathing weather but not so fine mullet fishing conditions. Even so, a brace of fish were caught up to 3lbs with one lucky member, Peter Foster, catching his first ever grey mullet. National Mullet Club Chairman, Steve Smith (pictured), showed how it’s done with a lovely fish on his first cast of the day.

Huge thanks goes to Steve, James Elton and the other members of the National Mullet Club who were on hand to guide Angling Trust members and show them tips and techniques. Everyone came away from this friendly and relaxed event having had fun and learnt something new about how to catch the elusive grey mullet.

Off the back of its success plans are being made to make this a regular event in the Sussex Region calendar with similar “masterclass” sessions for other species in the pipeline later in 2013 – keep your eyes out for more details.

  • Sussex Clubs Raise Over £1,000 For Charity – And Donate To Help Sea Angling

A special mention goes to members of Hove Deep Sea Anglers and the South Coast Angling Club whose inter-club competition and raffle raised an incredible £1012 for the Argus Appeal, a local charity.

Members of both clubs then went one step further by donating fishing tackle won in the raffle to the Sussex Marine Region in order to help us get more kids fishing. The Region was surprised and delighted to receive a brand new landing net, boat rods, a beachcaster and fixed spool reel from the lucky individuals who won them.

Our sincere thanks and congratulations to all involved for donating so generously to a local charity.
